The Struggle for Mediocrity

Do you ever wonder why we work so hard to look like everyone else? I mean, sure,
being seen as one of the crowd offers some ease and acceptance while living in our
society, but that’s about it. There’s no fulfillment in being just one of the many, but
longing for an easier life is understandable. Does anyone relate to this issue?
From a mood disorder perspective, we probably have all faced times when we have
been overwhelmed while trying to meet expectations, which can sometimes leave us
with the belief that we are simply not enough. We might feel like a drain on those
around us who seem to function inside society’s demands.. Maybe we’ve been told in
the past that we were not measuring up to our responsibilities. But who is the God of
this world, who sets these expectations in our hearts, and uses them to hurt us. Let’s
read Matthew 4:1-11 together.
Satan is the tempter, the one who tries to shame Jesus into taking care of himself, to
prove who he is in action. But Jesus proves who he is by his reliance on God, and
believing in his word. God called him to go into the wilderness, to fast, and to have faith.
Are we not in our own wilderness? Do we not deeply hunger for things that we know we
should not partake in, even while others do so freely and seem to come to no harm? Do
we not have tempters telling us to turn our backs on our faith?
This is not to say that we should never do anything to help ourselves, but to remember
who it is we follow. Rather than flounder after the mediocre life the world proclaims
loudly for us to fall in line with, we can trust and rest in our father’s wisdom and plan for
our lives. Our faith in him is based on who he is, what he has already done for us, his
creation of each of us, and his great love. I came across the following song while writing
this devotional, and I hope it touches and comforts your heart as it did mine.
God Has A Plan – John Drolet
I knew you before the start of time,
Every heartbeat, every dream in your mind.
Through the shadows, I see you still,
I’ve called you by name, I’ve whispered, “Be still.”
When the storms rise high and the nights grow long,
Don’t forget where you belong.
Chorus:
I have a plan, child, trust in Me,
A path for you that you can’t yet see.
I hold your tears and I know your fears,
But I’m right here—
Follow Me, follow Me, I’m near.
Every valley, every hill you climb,
I walk beside you through space and time.
When you’re weary and you lose your way,
My voice will guide you, don’t turn away.
When the world feels loud, and you feel so small,
Listen close—I’m in it all.
Chorus
You are loved, you are chosen,
A masterpiece in My hands.
Take a step, don’t be frozen,
Trust the One who understands.
Chorus.
So follow Me, child, don’t turn away,
I’ve written tomorrow and I’m here today.
Follow Me, follow Me, come and see,
The beautiful plan I made for thee.
